Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through artwork. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for television journalism. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of an individual member of the Jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a new publicist at a studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
